Mould In The Toilet
Let’s talk about Toilet Mould!
You’ve found mould growing inside your toilet and in other areas around the toilet. So, what can you do? The first thing is to understand why it is there and how you can deal with it.
What is toilet mould?
Toilet mould is a tiny particle of fungus growing inside your toilet. The mould produces spores which spread through the air and water. The spores act like seeds which form new colonies of mould when conditions are favourable
What causes mould to grow in toilets?
A toilet is the perfect environment for mould growth – moisture, food, and a suitable place to thrive
There are many reasons why your toilet is the ideal breeding ground for mould. If you have been away for a few days and your toilet hasn’t been used, then mould could begin to grow in both your toilet bowl and your tank as they are dark and humid spaces.
It’s far from ideal having mould growing in your toilet. As well as being unsightly, it can cause or exasperate health conditions.
Why is there mould growing in my toilet bowl?
Mould will thrive damp, dark & humid environments which makes your toilet bowl the ideal breeding ground. Stagnant water (if you’ve been away), infrequent cleaning and a leak could increase the changes of mould growth. Understanding what has caused the mould growth is imperative in preventing a reoccurrence.
The toilet lid can also be a factor. The toilet lid when closed means that the bowl is in darkness. Mould will thrive in dark, damp conditions. Reduce the amount of times the toilet is being flushed and suddenly your toilet bowl is the perfect environment for mould growth.
Why is there mould growing in my toilet tank?
If you notice mould below the waterline in your toilet bowl, this can be an indicator that your tank has a mould infestation.
Mould growing inside your toilet tank can be a serious problem as it’s impossible to eradicate the darkness and high humidity
I have mould growing around the base of my toilet. What can I do?
If your toilet is in good condition, it is rare that you would find mould growing around the base. Leaks in this area can trigger mould growth, so it is important that the source of the leak is found and repaired as a priority.
Can mould in your toilet be dangerous?
The mould in your toilet is harmless if you are in good health. But if your health is compromised or your are sensitive to mould, exposure can lead to health problems with your lungs, skin and other organs.
