Dry Drilling V Wet Drilling

Here at Mould Solutions we are often asked about our method for installing vents in walls for natural ventilation. We use a dry drilling system as we believe it’s the best option. Another option is a wet system. In this blog we’ll explore both types and their pros and cons.

It is important to note that the installation of a drilled wall vent should not be attempted without training and the use of specialised equipment. A properly constructed work platform is hugely important. The reason for this is because the force generated by core drilling can easily overpoweCore9b34 r the user and lead to serious injury.

Our method – Dry (drilling) System

  • Mould Solutions system drills from the inside out. We create very little or no dust during the process.
  • We use a dry drilling system
  • Typically, a hole between 112mm – 150mm in diameter is drilled using a specialised core drill machine & core bit using air extraction, to the exterior wall. (size dependant on requirement)
  • We then install a uPVC pipe insert inside the hole through the cavity.
  • Louvre vent covers (permanently open) are fitted and secured to the wall both internally and externally.

Vent Cover

Pros

Very little or no dust during the process.

Clean finish inside and out.

No shock hazard that comes with working with both electricity and water.

Neat and accurate job due to very little vibration on the building.

Louvre vent is plumb with the wall with neat appearance

Drilling is from the inside out compared to on a ladder platform or scaffolding (working at a height with a large drill)

Cons

Can be a slightly more expensive option

Other Method – Wet (drilling) System

  • A wet drilling system is used (with water)that creates a slurry that acts as a lubricant & coolant for the cutting edge

  • Drilling is done from inside or outside using a rig/tripod & is attached to your wall for stability)

 Pros

Larger cored holes can be drilled

Harder materials can be drilled.

Can be slightly cheaper than a dry drilling system

Cons

Will leave holes in Wall from the rig/tripod set up.

Not typically done in a domestic setting, it is a more for a commercial process and is commissioned during the building process or major renovations

Extremely dirty/ messy process the slurry will come out of the hole and cover the surrounding area.

This can be very hard to clean up

Shock hazard in certain circumstances combining electricity with water

Plaster and paint can be damaged
